Hyperobject

Within the Byzantine interior of Fitzrovia Chapel, Maria Kreyn’s atmospheric, abstract worlds converge with iconic architecture. Her oil paintings combine spiritualistic geometry, in the vein of Agnes Pelton, with wild surf, geological formations, elemental interactions, distant horizons, and changing light. Simultaneously stormy and sublime, visitors are invited into an environment designed for tranquility and prayer, meant to elicit awe, that has been punctuated by images that read almost like portals to other places—or, perhaps, our own inner experiences.

Hyperobject marks the fourth time that Kreyn has shown within an ecclesiastical setting, furthering her interest in dialogue between painting and architecture, and “transcending ideology and transforming the church into a site of secular reverence and existential wonder,” says a statement. The show coincides with Frieze London 2025 and remains on view through October 20. ✧
